Guide
WebP vs AVIF vs JPG: which should you actually ship?
A short decision table you can apply in ten seconds.
All three are fine. The question is what you are shipping, to whom.
| You are… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Publishing a website or blog | WebP | Universally supported now, transparency works, 25–35% under JPG. |
| Squeezing a hero image to the absolute minimum | AVIF | Smallest files, at the cost of slower encoding and older-browser gaps. |
| Uploading to an ad platform or print | JPG | Every platform accepts it. No surprises. |
| Shipping a logo or screenshot | PNG (or WebP) | Sharp edges and transparency stay crisp; PNG is lossless. |
A note on transparency
JPG has no alpha channel. Converting a PNG with transparency to JPG will fill the empty area with a colour — we use white, which is what most platforms expect. If you need the transparency, choose PNG or WebP.
Do you need to convert everything?
No. Convert the images that matter: hero images, product galleries, anything that appears on every page. Optimising 200 thumbnails that total 400 KB is not where your time goes.
